Q&A with DJ CandiDout
Recently, a fake interview was staged with DJ CandiDout by herself, as she was strapped for an idea to do a bio for her own web space.
* Interviewer: Well it is lovely to meet you today!
* DJ CandiDout: Thank you! (Laughing) It’s wonderful to be here!
* Interviewer: So tell us, what is up with your name?
* DJ CandiDout: Well to tell the truth, DJ Ann Marie seemed a little bland, and DJ CandiDout the Tekno Faerie seemed a little more fitting to me. Although, I must admit I thought about calling myself DJ Idril, but that didn’t pan out.
* Interviewer: What does your name mean, anyway? It seems a little complex!
* DJ CandiDout: (Laughing) I get asked that a lot! CandiDout, pronounced Candied Out, has several different meanings! It was first dubbed to me years ago when one of my friends saw I had on a TON of bracelets, called ‘Candy’ in the Rave community and exclaimed “Ann! You’re Candied Out!” Another definition is I admittedly have a fondness for candy! My favorite right now is Oompas. As for the Tekno Faerie, I love faeries and the like, and I have a pair of faerie wings I wear sometimes. The Tekno is self-explanatory as I love the techno music and culture.
* Interviewer: Well that certainly was a mouthful!
* DJ CandiDout: I guess it was!
* Interviewer: I’m sure you’re asked this all the time, but why do you DJ? How do you get possessed to make music?
* DJ CandiDout: Honestly, that’s the first time I’ve been asked that question! I’d have to say that I just get possessed from out of the blue to come up with a song. I may be filing through samples, or hear a favorite song on the radio which stirs my soul and moves me to my laptop to get my program started. The reason why I DJ is because music is an extension of myself. I relate more to music than almost other all art forms. Some songs just instantly make me happy and smile, others help me deal with anger or rage, music is a life force of its own.
* Interviewer: Besides making music, what do you do? Have you had any odd jobs?
* DJ CandiDout: (Laughing hysterically) Well that came out of the blue! Right now I am a senior at Ohio Dominican University and I’ll graduate in May of 2004 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communication with a minor in theatre. I’m currently a Student Technical Assistant for the University, meaning I work at the Computer Helpdesk. I may soon go back to work for the Build a Bear as a Master Bear Builder Extraordinaire. When I’m not in class or working, I’m performing in shows at Ohio Dominican, since I am the assistant to the Director of Theatre, Anne Diehl. I’ve been acting since about 1998, dancing since 1989, and singing since 1990. I’ve also been looking into this improvisation class which takes place in Downtown Columbus in the Brewery District. Every now and then, I’ll get out to the RedZone Night Club. I have this huge aspiration to perform there someday when I get turntables!
* Interviewer: And your plans for post-graduation?
* DJ CandiDout: I have no idea! I’d like to continue studying theatre, as I love to act, sing, and dance. After all, I used to be a semi-professional ballerina! I love to perform, which also shows when I make music. I really want to work on getting my music out so everyone can hear it and move to it. I don’t fear the future though; I just can’t wait to see what happens next!
* Interviewer: Well we certainly don’t fear what you’ll come out with in the future! It’s been great having you!
* DJ CandiDout: (Laughing) Thank you! It was great to be here today!
